Dear Troubleshooters, Our daughter has been in and out of mental institutions for years. She has 5 brothers and sisters, who are lawyers and doctors,. I am a hearing officer. None of us can get the help we need for her. Because I am getting older - she now lives at home - I'm terrified of what her future will be. Any thoughts for her safe keeping? The Judge Dear Judge, With all of the resources in your close family, your daughter is very lucky. How about buying a rental house and becoming a Section 8 landlord with a built-in tenant,. You can establish this through your local Housing
Authority which can approve family owned rentals on a case to case basis. Demand your daughter's mental health caseworker secure a professional couple for your daughter's attendants. (It is much easier to get high level attendants when you can offer a house vs an apartment.) Then, the professional couple manage all of your daughter's care, medical regimen, lifestyle adjustments with the constant support and oversight of her loving family.
The Troubleshooters Dear Troubleshooters, The newspapers reported an after school program for 12 teenagers with severe developmental disabilities was being cancelled because by mistake the state had been paying for it with "day-care" money. I'm a realtor in the neighborhood and it made me so mad, I sent the kids my check for $1,000. Is there anything we citizens can do to stop this nonsense when millions, yea, billions of dollars of our taxes go for unworthy things? A Real Realtor Dear Real, With citizen advocates like you, we can change the world! Help those parents (and the children's grandparents), get organized. Ask each family to contact their state and federal legislators. Suggest each family bring friends and neighbors into their after school organization. Call the group something like "Friends of Neurological Developmental Therapy" or "Friends", for short. Demand that the after-school program no longer be called the unfunded and non-mandated "day care", but be extended to weekends and be what it should be which is Neurological Developmental Therapy. Yeah team! The newspaper that exposed this will love
you.
